In 2011 I decided to become a tourist local guide in the island of Flores and surrounds. My decision disappointed my parents for a little bit. They wanted me to work as a civil servant or work in a company, but I still believed in my passion. I then decided to go to Frans Seda airport every day. Consequently, I had to spend hours there and watched the guides greeted and offered lightly their tour services to foreign tourists who came out of the arrivals room of the airport. There were also guide drivers who immediately meet foreign tourists cheerfully because they have booked in advance.
Luckily, I have a habit of having coffee. I spent this to ask for some senior guide drivers and discuss about how to get foreign tourists on the island of Flores. I studied tourism in Bali for 6 years before, but I didn’t really know much about being a tourist local guide in Maumere and surrounds. So, I need to be flexible and open-minded in a communication to get my passion. I was happy that the guide drivers were not stingy for sharing their tips for success. We can engage and learn each other. We were friends and finally in 2012 a senior named Harry Black entrusted me to leading Raymond Martin and his wife, from USA in an overland tour from Maumere to Labuan Bajo. This is my first experience to be a real local guide in Flores Island.
It was look like I’d reached my goal but not done yet. I found that my English requires a lot of practices. Check out my video to know how Raymond Martin suggested how I speak English. I respected and realized through authentic encounters with the American people. I must practice, practice, and practice my English. Even though he criticized my English competency, but I am proud of him because this American man told me in his testimonial. “This guide is great.
